Apologies if I am in the wrong place to ask this question - hope for help.
I downloaded maps for the Dalmatia area recently, but seem to have got a corrupted file somehow and now Mapsource will not open, giving an error message as follows:
"There is a problem with the Openmaps installation. Please re-install Openmaps and start Mapsource again."
I have uninstalled the maps, but still there is the problem, which suggests that there is a registry element remaining that should be removed. Can you alert me to which registry components relate to Openmaps and their connect to Mapsource?
This is because we have all our files split into several *.txt files (basically, the are in *.mp format) with POIs kept separately in *.pnt files (enhanced Ozi PNT format). There are separate files for roads, tram lines, topographic features and so on, and they are grouped in regions, called UMP-something, which in turn get compiled to separate maps forming a set.
There are several tools in the "narzedzia" subdirectory which manipulate these files to montage them into a file editable by mapedit, but if you just get the "header.txt" from "narzedzia" and then merge it with all the *.txt files from any UMP-something/src/*.txt directory, you should be able to load it to mapedit for a preview. For example:
Under UNIX: cat narzedzia/header.txt UMP-Zamosc/src/*.txt > sample.mp
Under MS-Windows: type narzedzia\header.txt UMP-Zamosc\src\*.txt > sample.mp
Note however, that our final version has a lot of other features, which are added at the preprocessing stage of the actual map compilation - such as routing, routing restrictions, country/region information and of course the POIs.
1) Sources are just plain text files. cvs tracks changes, keeps logs, allows to revert to a given version etc.
3) There is a windows client too (wincvs - screenshots on wiki). ;-) Mail sent.
Thanks.
1) So your datas are in one database?
2) OK, we also will try to respect those points
3) Huh! Can you send me a .mp sample somehow? Only one region. You can email me to gmail.com. I'm kepenu there too ;-)
1) Both. Road project is getting richer and richer every now and then but we try to keep some kind of data in Topo version only (like trails). There is a set of common data and some files included in topo compilation only.
2) We synchronize border crossing points with CNE.
3) Sources are kept in public cvs repository. There is a downloading instruction on project wiki, but... you will see ;-)
(try cvs -z5 -d:pserver:guest@ump.waw.pl/home/cvsroot checkout all to download all sources; Poland is splitted to many regions). POIs are kept in (enhanced) pnt format and converted to mp during compilation.
UMP-radary are safety cameras (to be loaded by poiloader)
.

We tried to get in connection with some members of your project but unfortunately there was no answer. Fellow Popey tried to help us, without any luck.
Let me have some questions:
1) What is the main goal of your project? Mapping for cars or outdoor hobbies or both? Will you keep Road and Topo projects separated?
2) Is there a chance to synchronize Polish border and border crossing points with our Czech and Slovak objects of the same kind?
3) Can you see any option for getting draft, Polish format files of your project? For investigating possibilities of converting a copy of your map to our output formats.

hi folks,
your maps where really of big help to me when i travelled through rumania the last two weeks. i couldn´t find a link on your homepage how i can donate something to you?
Hi, Germany isn't among our short term plans. Why?
- Germany is big (much data) and we dont' have too much hw resource
- We don't have data from area of Germany (except public datas: srtm and clc)
- Germany is relative far from Hungary and we don't know how much our project is known over there. Integrating G. in our maps may be a blind alley at his moment because of the possibility of lack of tracks senders and map editors.
Anyway, if a lot of enthusiast german tracker apply for sending tracks we'll reconsider integrating G.
Hi,
I just wanted to know if creating a German map for Navitel is on your agenda. I successfully converted some from Garmin img format to nm2 but they are all not routable (for instance from here http://openmtbmap.org/download/).
Thanks!
they do not release their map in mp
That's why we need to contact the authors/owners directly. Do you know names/emails?
But i don't think we'll be successfull cause i've found this text on a google-translated forum:
Our project is free, but not open source, and anyone, under any conditions, the source will not be issued! Never! Exactly! Not ever! We will circulate a card for free, but only in the format nm2!
But we can not use the ready nm2 files, because the GPSMapedit can not read it, only write this format.
For the integration we have the raw material in mp fomat.
do you recommend to integrate these map into our map set?
I read cyrillic characters a bit hardly... or noways. So i would thank you if you could drop here a direct link to download file(s). (You don't need to upload anywhere just give us a direct link...).
We'll check it and we'll see how to go further.
Hello
I have a great Moldovan map for Navitel 3.2.6 and I can upload it wherever you like.
It's not cracked and it's free. I personally downloaded it from http://gps.realitpro.com/
A gps dealer told me that oregon is not able to turn on/off individual map segments.
The sctucture of our maps are to be changed. Soon, we hope. So I'm not sure we'll spend time for renaming cd set names of current products. But we'll pay attention to cd set names on upcoming products.
Thanks.
Renaming the .img files works just fine, Oregon finds them with no problem.
But the setup allows me only to enable/disable all the maps with the same "name".
It would be great if the maps could be called simply "OpenMaps Hungary" or "OMP Hungary" etc, just like the biking and hiking maps are called "OpenMaps Biking Color Highlight" and "OMP Hiking Color Highlight".
Since renaming gmapsupp.img is not a supported thing i think it may be cause different behavior on different devices...
Your device may not support turning off individual imgs...? I don't know anything about oregon's technical features.
60 and 76 series and etrex'es has a way to this: pressing Menu key on map screen and selecting Setup Map brings a "tabbed" setup screen; the last but one tab (with info icon) lists all the imgs uploaded to device and allows turning on/off them. You might find this feature on the deeps of menu structure...
I'll ask about this problem on another (hungarian) forum... and if there is something interest I'll share with you.

Yeah, I use MapSource to get the map onto the device, then rename the gmapsupp.img file. This works fine.
But the Map Setup lets me switch just between the "cd-set name", as you call it. I can't switch the individual img files on/off other than by doing so on computer (e.g. renaming them to non-img files or deleting), which sucks...
So is there no work-around for this?
even when I keep the maps for different countries in different .img files
It's not really clear what "keep" means in this context. I guess you use mapsource to transfer map segments to your device. Mapsource melts map segment img files into one big file (gmapsupp.img) and sends it to gps (but it is invisible for mapsource users).
The switchability is only partly dependant of map segments (at least on my 60csx).
First, the full uploaded set is dividable by imgs as you noticed. So my gps allows me to switch off/on maps by individual img files in "map setup" menu.
Second, every mapsource product has a so-called "cd-set name". We've set it to "OpenMaps" for all our products. Map segments are also switchable grouped by by cd set names on 60csx.
I guess, your oregon cares cd set names. Since it is a constant for all OMP product your gps treats all OMP imgs as one switchable group.

First of all, thanks for the great maps!
In the romanian mountains, they were much more useful than a commercial one.
My question is - how can I keep the maps separated in my device? I use Garmin Oregon and even when I keep the maps for different countries in different .img files, I can only enable/disable all of the OpenMaps at once (although I see the different descriptions under it).
Any ideas please?
Thanks in advance!
I've never used nuvi 205 before so I've got no ideas how it works.
On other equipments moving the map pointer to somewhere and pressing 'enter' will give you a menu containing a 'go here' item which plans a route from your current position to map pointer.
And there is also a 'new route' function where you can add route points one-by-one.
I have downloaded Romania(3d) .img file and installed on mine Garmin Nuvi 205. The map is visable but address serching and routing not working. Are address searching and routing available in mentioned map ? With greetings, Filo.
If you use a Garmin outdoor GPS, you don't need to worry much about batteries. You can take some AA batteries and/or accus with you and no problem.
I would recommend a color GPS with "x" mark which means a data card (micro SD) option. GPSMAP 60CSx is a top model, but if you want a cheaper one just take a look at Legend HCx.
You will get Mapsource software as well, and you will be able to manage your maps on PC and transfer them onto your GPS.
Does anyone know any specific models of pda that I can use with any of the maps on this site?
Map usability depends on navigational software mainly.
The good question is "does the current gisrussa/navitel/... software run smoothly on XXX pda?". Please look for specification of these softwares and the pdas you might buy, and compare them.
In general, windows-based pdas are able to run these sw-es. Peter68 may tell you more about pdas and pda-based navi sw-es.
But if you have an mtb and you do use it in mountains as well I do not recommend buying a pda.
I'd love to get a Garmin, but I'm trying to do this on a budget.
Just to clear it up, I'm going on a bicycle.
I'm not worried about following it directly all the time, just as a backup to check where I am from time to time.
Does anyone know any specific models of pda that I can use with any of the maps on this site? I'd love to hear from people with any exact models of pdas and bluetooth gps units that work, (particularly cheap ones).
Also any specific smartphones that work with these maps would be good to know (My phone is pretty knackered so I could justify spending a bit more on that).
It mainly depends on your typical usage of gps unit.
Garmin may be the better choice onto trails. PDAs (with built-in or external receiver) is comfortable for cars.
Does "Bike" mean bicycle or motorbike?
There's protection boxes for PDAs for motorbike usage, but Garmin has an equipment designed especially for motorbikers. Anyway, I use a 60csx on my Suzuki...
Bicycle is a borderline. Garmin may be a better choice on MTBs. PDAs can also be well usable staying on paved roads.
You can download our maps for Garmin devices and for PDA navigation softwares (GISRussa, Navitel) as well.
I have no experience with smartphones but you may be able to use our garmin-format maps on a smartphone with garmin xt.
Basic Question. What equipment do you recommend to read this data with? Is it easy to load it onto devices?
I'm going to the Czech republic to do a bike ride from Prague to Budapest, via Vienna. I'd like to buy a unit that shows where I am on a map, but I don't want to pay for phone charges.
Is it best to buy a) a pda plus a bluetooth adaptor,
b) a smartphone (anyone with experience with not paying for phone charges, please give a specific model)
c) a Garmin cycling computer.
I am trying to do this as cheaply as possible, but am also worried about battery life running out.

Routing is available and should work 'cause it works on all our gps units.
Address searching is not available at this time but we're working on it.

Thanks so much for your quick reply Trackman.
Thanks again,
Chris

Thanks in advance for any help given.
ChrisD
