The main idea of this project is that everyone is free to use the maps found on this site. But maps cannot exist if you don't help in exchange for.
This way you wouldn't be interested in downloading maps if they are not (or less) usable but they can be usable only if you help us.
So we need YOU!!!
There are levels of participating in this project:
Most GPS handhelds (or any other GPS connected to a PDA, for example) have the ability to memorize it's current position from time to time. If this time interval is short enough then connecting the memorized points with straight lines will give you the path you walked or drived. This path is called "tracklog".
Primarily you can help us recording and uploading tracklogs.
Due to inaccuracy of the commercial GPS receivers it is not enough to have one tracklog of a road for placing this road onto the map. Map lines could be drawn correctly by two or more correlating good quality tracklogs of a road or a trail. Therefore that's a good practice to always turn on your GPS tracklog-recording function and upload the result.
Important! You should understand that the quality and usability of a tracklog can be very different depending on the circumstances you recorded the tracklog. It is easy to record an unusable tracklog if you don't pay attention for some things!
You can find detailed information about setting up GPS receivers for logging, description of influential circumstances, etc. under How to record tracklogs?.
When you have tracklog files the Upload track menu guides you to share this information with us and with everyone.
Some detailed informations:
- important information is the file extension. The automatic system will select the files based on extension. Please be attent when upload your files.
- we accept only the following file type:
| G7toWin | .g7t |
| Gps Exchange Format | .gpx |
| Garmin database format v1,v2,v3 | .gdb |
| Garmin Mapsource | .mps |
| Google Earth | .kml |
| Gps Trackmaker | .gtm |
| Magellan | .pdb |
| NMEA 0183 | .nmea |
| Ozi Explorer track | .plt |
| Ozi Explorer waypoint | .wpt |
| Photos | .jpg |
And these files in the following archive:
| Zip | .zip |
| Arj | .arj |
| Seven Zip | .7z |
| Rar | .rar |
And we accept the KML file type zipped in KMZ type.
- if you upload a file what not in the list, we will reject it.
- if you upload an archive what doesn't contain min. 1 accepted types, we will reject it.
- if we found a unknown types in the archive, it will be ignored. The archive in the archive is unkonown types.
As you can see above tracklogs are almost always inaccurate. Unfortunately there's no correct computational way to filter these inaccuracies and produce topologically correct lines, crosses, etc. on the map. So human map editors draw map objects by hand based on the tracklogs, cleaned, averaged and weighted by eye! - this is the most human part of the map creating process.
Therefore we need enthusiastic people who help us draw the maps.
If you would like to participate this way then go to "Contact us" menu and post a line into the forum. (Do not worry, it's not a must to have cartographial knowledge. You should be an experinced computer user and it is lucky if you are patient and precise.)
There are many-many things we have to do to create the background infrastructure. These things are currently testing-related stuffs, you can participate if you are a very experienced computer-user or a programmer with good geometrical knowledge, you're very patient and you have a lot of free time.
If you are interested in recording and sharing tracklogs please read the Recording Tracklogs menu below carefully! And after recording go to Track Upload.
If you would like to help in any other way then contact us on forums.
